AI-Generated Content and SEO: The Real Risks

The short answer

Google does not penalize content for being AI-generated; it penalizes content that is unhelpful, regardless of how it was made. The real risks are scaled content abuse (mass-publishing thin pages), zero added value (rephrasing what already ranks), factual errors that erode trust, and sameness that earns no links or engagement. AI-assisted content with original data, experience, and editing is fine. Hundreds of unedited AI pages published at once is the pattern that gets sites hit.

Google's stated position is that it rewards helpful content however it is produced, and its spam policies name scaled content abuse, not AI, as the violation. That distinction matters: the tool is not the risk. The publishing pattern is.

What are the actual risks?

  • Scaled content abuse: publishing large volumes of low-effort pages primarily to capture search traffic.
  • No information gain: AI trained on existing pages naturally regurgitates them, so pure AI posts add nothing the index lacks.
  • Hallucinated facts: one confident error in a how-to can undermine trust in the whole site.
  • Sameness: generic content earns no backlinks, no shares, and weak engagement signals over time.
  • Thin E-E-A-T: no evidence of first-hand experience, which matters most in advice and product content.

How do you use AI for content safely?

Add something the model could not: your own results, screenshots, numbers, process, or opinion. Use AI for outlines, drafts, and editing, then inject the first-hand layer yourself and fact-check every claim before publishing. Publish at a pace you can genuinely review. A workflow built on structured prompts, like those in the Creator Prompt Pack, keeps AI in the assistant seat where it belongs.

AI content risks get amplified on sites that are weak elsewhere: no clear author, no internal structure, slow pages. Strong site plus edited, experience-rich content is a combination no policy update targets.
