Google Search Console: The Five Reports That Matter

The short answer

The five Google Search Console reports that matter: Performance (which queries and pages get impressions and clicks), Indexing/Pages (what is indexed and why pages are excluded), URL Inspection (per-page diagnosis and reindex requests), Sitemaps (submit and verify your XML sitemap), and Core Web Vitals (LCP, CLS, INP field data). A practical monthly routine: find page-two queries in Performance to improve, check Pages for unexpected exclusions, and confirm no new Core Web Vitals failures.

Search Console is the only place Google tells you directly how it sees your site, and it is free. Most owners either never open it or drown in reports that do not matter. Five reports carry nearly all the value.

What does each report tell you?

  • Performance: queries, clicks, impressions, average position, and CTR per page. This is where opportunities live.
  • Indexing (Pages): how many pages are indexed and, crucially, the reasons others are not (noindex, redirects, crawled but not indexed, duplicates).
  • URL Inspection: paste any URL to see its index status, and request indexing after publishing or fixing a page.
  • Sitemaps: submit your XML sitemap once and check it stays readable.
  • Core Web Vitals: real-user field data on LCP, CLS, and INP, grouped by page type.

What is the highest-value routine?

Monthly, open Performance and filter for queries where your average position is 8-20: page one's bottom and page two. These are pages Google already half-trusts; improving the content, title, and internal links pointing at them is the cheapest ranking gain available. Then scan Pages for anything important sitting in the excluded bucket, and glance at Core Web Vitals for new failures. Fifteen minutes covers it.

Verification and sitemap submission belong in your launch process, not as a retrofit; the Pre-Launch Checklist includes them among the technical steps new sites commonly skip. Interpreting the data, and turning page-two queries into content improvements, is part of the launch and SEO module in the Premium Website Masterclass. Search Console will not do your SEO, but it tells you exactly where your effort pays first, which is more than any paid tool can promise.
