One-Page vs Multi-Page Websites: Which Should You Choose?
The short answer
Choose a one-page website when you have one audience and one goal: portfolios, restaurants, events, product launches, local services. Choose multi-page when you need to rank for multiple distinct search terms, sell many products, or publish ongoing content — each page can target its own keyword. Rule of thumb: under roughly 1,500 words of content, one page wins on focus and speed; multiple content-heavy topics need their own pages.
This decision gets overthought. It comes down to two questions: how much do you have to say, and how many different searches do you want to be found for. Answer those and the structure picks itself.
When a one-page site wins
- One audience, one action: book a table, hire me, buy the drop, RSVP
- Content fits in a few scrolls without feeling crammed
- Speed matters: one HTML file, one load, no navigation dead-ends
- Maintenance is near zero — no menus, no orphaned pages, no broken internal links
When you genuinely need multiple pages
- SEO across distinct terms: a page each for 'wedding photography Pune' and 'corporate headshots Pune' will outrank one page trying to do both
- A catalogue: more than a handful of products or services each needing depth
- Ongoing publishing: blogs and guides need their own URLs to accumulate rankings
- Distinct audiences: clients and job applicants should not share one scroll
Yes, and it is usually the right call. Launch a sharp one-pager, and when a section outgrows its slot — services ballooning, a blog you actually write — break it out to its own page. The reverse migration (collapsing a bloated five-page site into one) is far more painful. The Interactive Template Bundle covers nine one-page layouts across niches, each a single HTML file you can also split into multiple pages later by copying sections out. And Zero to First Sale is a useful companion if the site's job is to sell your first product rather than just exist.
