Receiving International Payments as an Indian Freelancer
The short answer
Indian freelancers typically receive international payments via SWIFT wire to their bank account, or through Wise, Payoneer, or PayPal — which differ mainly in fees and exchange-rate markup. Invoice in the client's currency, collect FIRC/FIRA certificates as proof of export earnings, and note that service exports can be zero-rated under GST with an LUT filed. Always compare the effective rate — fees plus FX markup — not the advertised fee. Confirm compliance specifics with a CA.
What are your realistic options?
- SWIFT wire transfer: works everywhere, decent rates for larger amounts, but flat bank charges hurt small payments
- Wise: transparent mid-market exchange rate with a stated fee; often the best effective rate for small and mid-sized invoices
- Payoneer: popular with marketplaces and agencies; gives you receiving accounts in foreign currencies
- PayPal: convenient for clients, but combined fees and FX markup are usually the highest of the four
The trap is comparing advertised fees instead of effective rates. A 'zero fee' service that converts your dollars 2–3% below the mid-market rate costs more than a service charging a visible fee at the true rate. On a $2,000 invoice, that difference is real money — calculate the rupees that actually land, not the fee line.
What paperwork should you keep?
For every foreign payment, keep the invoice and the FIRC/FIRA (foreign inward remittance certificate or advice) your bank or payment provider issues. These prove your income is export earnings — relevant for GST zero-rating (with an LUT filed) and for clean records generally. Purpose codes on wires matter too; your bank will ask, and the code should match what you actually do. A CA can set this up correctly once, and it then runs on rails.
To keep invoicing foreign clients painless, invoice in the client's currency with clear payment instructions for your chosen method, and state your terms — advance percentage and due date — exactly as you would domestically. Invoice Studio handles clean, professional invoices in the browser. And remember that foreign clients calibrate to their local market rates, not Indian ones; quoting your domestic rate to a US client leaves serious money on the table. The Charge More pricing guide covers repositioning your pricing for international clients without losing the deal.
